Is ERW safe?

Modified on Mon, 18 Dec, 2023 at 4:39 PM

Enhanced rock weathering (ERW) is a safe environmental practice that brings substantial benefits to the areas where it's applied. We ensure safety by carefully selecting and testing the rocks against strict European soil guidelines to avoid adding any harmful elements to the soil. Regular testing—every 3,000 tonnes— ensures the rock we spread has acceptably low levels of any potentially toxic elements. We also conduct detailed lab tests and field trials to confirm the ERW process does not adversely affect the soil.

The spreading of rock is carried out locally to match the soil's natural composition, avoiding areas with alkaline soils like chalk or limestone. Although not required by law, we provide personal protective equipment to our workers handling fine rock particles to guarantee their safety at all times.
