In the UK, the basalt we use – known as basalt fines (particles of between 0 and 4 mm in size) – is an existing aggregate product, so we use no additional energy to procure it. Our UK spreading sites are located close to our supplier quarries to minimise the amount of energy and emissions required for transportation. Our lifecycle analysis indicates that our operations using basalt are 95% carbon efficient. This means that for every 100 tonnes of CO2 we remove, we only emit 5.
In Canada, we work with our partners at Canadian Wollastonite to mine wollastonite specifically for crushing and spreading on agricultural land. Even with ‘bespoke’ mining and crushing, UNDO’s lifecycle analysis with Canadian Wollastonite boasts more than 90% carbon efficiency. For every 100 tonnes of CO2 removed through the spreading of wollastonite, less than 10 tonnes of CO2 are emitted in the process of getting it from mine to farm.
